Former Essex man would 'love'
Posted On 07/29/2010 05:39:56

FORMER Essex bowling coach and player Ian Pont says he would love to take over the vacant England fast bowling position following the departure of Ottis Gibson last week.

With no obvious candidate available, the ECB is embarking on a worldwide search led by ECB Team Director Andy Flower, who spent three years working with Pont during 2005 to 2007 2010 world cup while both were at Chelmsford.

In that time, Pont helped Essex to consecutive Division One Pro 40 titles as he honed the talent of the likes of Graham Napier, Ryan ten Doeschate and Maurice Chambers -as well as Dale Steyn, who spent six weeks with Pont, and is now the world's leading fast bowler.

"I have 15 years experience developing talent at all levels and eight years coaching firstclass watches-a and international players within teams and privately from various ed hardy hoodies countries," he said.

"So I really do understand what makes people tick. The England post is the only fulltime fast bowling role I would truly love to hold so I am not going to apply for every national bowling vacancy going around the world. I am English and this is my home."

Pont, who played 47 times for Essex in the 1980's, was also assistant head coach of the Netherlands at the 2007 World Cup competition.
